The Blast

April was a busy month for the Bloomington-Normal Jaycees.  One of the chapter's big, yearly events had another successful run, volunteers showed up to help multiple non-profit's with their fundraising events, and time was still set aside for learning new skills and socializing with each other.  The chapter saw bump ups in both membership and donations to charities and worthy causes. April's activities seemed to be a good representation of the purpose of the B-N Jaycees.
8th Annual
Tulip 5k for a Cure
2016 was another good year for the Tulip 5k for a Cure.  Our annual race to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer research grows every year, in attendance and in awards.  This 8th race marked the first Cindy K. Griesemer Memorial Award, named after the inspiration for the creation of the Tulip 5k for a Cure.

This year’s batch of 5k winners received great prizes from The Corn Crib, Fleet Feet, and more.  Once again, at the end of it all, the B-N Jaycees have another bundle of donations for Siteman Cancer Center to take another step forward in the fight against Pancreatic Cancer.

Full-strength  U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington is home to the Bloomington Thunder, a junior hockey team.   The Bloomington-Normal Jaycees met up as a group for a game.  What’s great about hockey is that it’s exciting on every skill level.  Even watching the grade school kids skate around and chase the puck during halftime is fun!
May Event Spotlight

Saturday May 7th, 6 P.M.

Much like Cinco de Mayo, the May 7th event will be a celebration of Hispanic Culture that will include lessons on Mexican History, prominent figures in folklore, the significance of the Mexican Flag and other fun stuff.

And of course, the lesson will be supplemented with Spanish cuisine and beverages, generously provided by our hosts.

Wheelchair Basketball  We once again worked with LIFE CIL on their annual Wheelchair Basketball Game.  LIFE CIL is a non-profit that works to support disabled individuals and their families.  Each year, they host a basketball game between two teams of wheelchair athletes at a junior high in Normal.  The B-N Jaycees run the concessions area at the event, offering a variety of snacks and drinks for all who attend.  One of the more prominent items that the Jaycees sell at the concession stand are the hot dogs.  Two of the chapter’s members were awesome enough to design and put together a t-shirt for the Jaycees volunteers to wear.
Trivia Night  A group known as The Friends of The Autism Place came to the B-N Jaycees for help with a trivia night to raise funds for The Autism Place (TAP).  TAP is a non-profit through Illinois State University that connects and communicates with families affected by Autism.  Both organizations had a great time at the trivia night, and as a result, the B-N Jaycees were able to deliver a check for donations to a valuable local support group.
Individual Development  Our April Individual Development meetup took place at Select Archery, in indoor bow range in Normal.  The owner of the shop gave us a lesson on three different type of bows, then we were able to test them all out!  Some of us were beginners and others were seasoned pros, but we were all hitting the bullseye by the end of the night. We even capped the night off with shooting a crossbow!

Should any of us every find ourselves in a world similar to Katniss, Robin Hood, or the girl from Brave, we’ll have no problem surviving.
